THE NEWBORN BONNET – free pattern

English here

The newborn bonnet is exactly the kind of gift I would have loved to receive for my newborn if I didn’t know how to sew. At once vintage, useful, stylish, and increasingly rare to find, the bonnet is a practical gift for which you can use your fabric scraps. Let your imagination run wild by combining pretty patterned fabrics (such as Liberty) and matching them with your favorite ribbon colors. Baby can wear it until they are 3 to 4 months old.

Sewing instructions in 5 easy steps:

  1. Close the neck darts by connecting points A and B while matching the notches. Do the same for the second identical piece which will serve as the lining.
  1. Pin the two pieces along the front, layering them right sides together. Sew 1 cm from the edges. Iron.
  2. Fold the lining (the second piece) inside the bonnet. The two pieces are now layered wrong sides together. Iron the fold formed on the right side.
  3. Baste the back parts of the bonnet and the lining together. Still on the back, iron a first fold of 0.5 cm. Then a second fold of 1.5 cm to form the ribbon casing. Sew 2 mm from this last fold.
  4. Using a safety pin, thread your ribbon through the casing. Once the ribbon is inserted, adjust the length and cut the ends on the bias (for synthetic ribbons, seal the raw edges near a heat source – e.g., a match flame).

✨ The ideal gift: Sew 3 little bonnets, arrange them in a box, cover with tissue paper, wrap it all up… and you’ve just created the perfect (and affordable!) baby shower gift.
