I’ll never forget. She had a look that was a mix of astonishment, surprise, and amusement. She then handed me the sheet with big amounts on it, and I could see her waiting for my reaction. It reminded me of the day I went to the car dealers to buy my current car. When I came in, he said, “Yes? What’s it for?” So, I reminded him of his “Yes, what’s it for?” two weeks later when I was placing my order and trying to negotiate some options for my car. He turned bright red; he wasn’t expecting that. And that was the happy ending to that negotiation 😂.To return to the example of wax print fabric, with time and hindsight, I understand the point of his question. Indeed, they are more accustomed to producing either their own designs or commissions from large state institutions for specific events like their 50th anniversary. So, for someone who arrived dressed in a simple strappy dress and bare feet (because that day I was far from imagining I would find myself in Vlisco’s office), I must have looked like a complete clown.2️⃣ The customer isn’t king: a shift in perspectiveThe start of this project (and up until a month ago) was tough. Unanswered emails, unanswered questions, several weeks of silence, and therefore several weeks of waiting. It was unbearable. Those who follow me here know that I’ve been working on this project for over two years. I’m making very slow progress, but there are several reasons for that. So, to go through all this only to find no one at the end of the road... it’s a bit disconcerting. That’s why I couldn’t really respond to messages from people asking how the wax project was progressing, because I was asking myself the same question 😂 For me, who strives to treat each customer so they have the best possible experience with my brand, it was difficult.
Je ne sais pas où ce projet nous amènera, mais n’o Je ne sais pas où ce projet nous amènera, mais n’oubliez pas que ça a commencé ici dans notre communauté couture. Grace à vous, j’ai réussi à financer les deux coloris. Il y a pleins d’étapes encore à venir. Il y a aussi pleins d’indices de design dans la video ;) ouvrez l’oeil 👁️(et les oreilles aussi!). ⏰ J’ai enfin préparé un pitch pour présenter le projet en 1 min 30 . Ce weekend, on fera peinture sur toile. Il y a une chose que j’aurais voulu, c’est que mes parents m’initient à différents types d’arts pour mieux m’orienter dans la vie professionnelle plus tard. Mais ils ont fait ce qu’ils ont pu. Et je leur suis reconnaissante tout de même car eux, m’ont orientée dans une voie, et moi je me suis cherchée (et je continue à me chercher) à partir de là.
